Forums are a kind of virtual blackboards; a message in a forum can be read and answered to by many people.

Mailinglists are e-mail-Lists. If you are subscribed to such a list, it is enough to send a mail to the address of this list, and everybody else subscribed to this list gets the mail and can respond to it.

Chats are a possibility of real-time conversation over the internet - similar to the telephone, just written instead of oral
